Aardman X Barbour Experience

In the summer of 2024, I was extremely lucky to be able to take part in some work experience at Aardman Studios in Bristol. Having worked at Barbour in retail as a day job for many years, I used my networking skills to enquire about any possible opportunities to work on the Christmas advert for their campaign. Luckily this was something they were able to help with!
Working in the model making department and in their studios was so exhilarating. I was able to produce some of the Shaun the Sheep scarves and hats, as well as assist with animating the motorbike scene. Aardman is filled with the most amazing talented creators, I was even able to learn from Tim Allen who was working on another project there at the time! I will always cherish my first professional on set experience.
This making of video shows the pre-production, development and post-production process of making my final year university project. The brief was very vague, we were tasked to produce a body of work the exhibited and area of animation.
Knowing I wanted to work in short-form advertisement, this was my chance to explore and showcase my passion for mixed media and avant garde concepts.
I have never really gravitated towards the traditional routes of animator success such as Disney or anime, and enjoyed animation as more of a story telling method than an entity itself. I wanted to challenge myself with how my props and characters interacted with eachother, as well as learn use of industry level equipment such as the motion control rig, stopmotion into 2D and green screening.
